Sophie Doutreligne

In her artistic practice, Sophie Doutreligne plays with boundaries of what’s socially accepted.

Fascinated by provocation and the potential narrative of the sexualized body, Sophie presents the spectator pornographic, taboo-like, alienating, yet very recognizable situations.

The ambiguity coming from the rich source of amateur porn thrills her: an apparent ‘universal’ pornographic scene is staged within the privacy of the house. All that remains is a very private vulnerability - bodily imperfections, worn out sofa’s, dirty jugs and leftovers - and the failed desire to answer to the expectations of the viewer.

The fake gloss of constructed desire is replaced by a sensitive truth until the image gets so intimate that you almost feel ashamed of looking (away).

Provocation is not the only way she expresses herself though. This is visible in the many sensitive sketches and drawings of loved ones, landscapes and situations.

In terms of shape and design, Sophie explores the opportunities but also the limits of a broad range of media and materials: the uncompromising and direct nature of a pencil drawing, the limitations of a canvas for needlework, the challenges of slowly drying oil paint and the unpredictable nature of a linocut. Every medium is carefully connected to the expression of a specific idea.

“Bloot”

A group exhibition with 10 young artists all over Flanders. Curating the young brings photography, paintings, poetry... to the streets of Brussels, Leuven, Ghent, Antwerp and Hasselt.

What does "Bloot" mean? It's nakedness, in all its forms. Discover how the artists translate this theme each in their own way.

This exhibition was made possible by Curating The Young, a young and dynamic curatorial collective that makes space for up-and-coming talent. For five years now, they have been providing a stage for young artists.
